Millwork...I love it! I'm a sucker for good millwork. I come by that honestly. My grandfather built homes and would install the trim throughout. He especially loved dental moulding and would apply it to almost every project. My father worked under him as a young man and then continued in the building industry after obtaining a degree in Industrial Arts. He can also build anything. I still have one of his Millwork books from the 70's.

Most new construction homes are lacking these details and that is one of the first things I begin adding when I move into a new home. Crown moulding is a small project that will make a big difference. Adding wainscoting, like board and batten or beadboard, can really make a space interesting. Thanks to my father's skill set, I can draft up anything and he will construct it for me. I'm very grateful for his help in all my big schemes and hope to inherit his saws and tools one day. Find yourself a good carpenter and he or she will do amazing things for your home.

This amazing staircase is lined with beautiful millwork. YAWN design studio did a fantastic job of breaking up the enormous ceiling height using millwork in their Tillinghast project. I also love how the light filters in from those gorgeous windows!

Another staircase, by Elsa Soyars Interiors, handles the similar issue of soaring ceiling height with a simple millwork detail. This foyer has a more uniform approach, but is no less in design.

This room would have been very boring if the built-ins were not installed into this family room space. The IKEA hacks just cannot compete with custom millwork.

Built-ins not only look great and add interest to a space, but also give function. Take this small alcove at the back door. What could have been the shoe and backpack dump is now organized and pleasing to the eye. Each person has a hook and their own cubbie for shoes, bags, keys, etc. Also known as the Mudroom....or in Florida, the Sandroom.
