The Nursery

One of the most precious rooms in a house...the nursery. For some people it is a room they've waited their entire life to decorate and have the entire space planned in their head. For others, it's a room that they get stuck and don't know where to begin. There are so many choices and color schemes, trends and vintage classics, boy or girl...or in my case both. (a boy & a girl...twins!) The nursery can be very expensive or just the essentials. There is research to tell you what colors to paint or not to paint...shapes or no shapes...animals or no animals....Winnie the Pooh or Frozen...cars and trucks or princesses...and don't forget the Stars Wars or Harry Potter fans. It's overwhelming and at the end of the day, that baby will not care if he or she sleeps on a baseball quilt or a white sheet.
My favorite nurseries are often timeless spaces that a child can grow with. For all of my children, I selected a color scheme that will be easy to transition through the years. Their interests can change with the latest Disney movie or sports team and I don't have to buy new bedding, drapes and artwork every time. You can still select a theme or color scheme, but it doesn't have to look like a 6 month old lives in the room when in reality that baby is now 8 years old! Not everyone has the time, energy and money to recreate their child's bedroom every year.
Let's take a look at some beautiful nurseries that are timeless rooms and can be enjoyed by the child and parent or even a guest if need be.
These first rooms are great examples of how a neutral room can transition into an older child's room or even a guest room. Just switch the crib for a bed and voila!
Now...I'm going a bit on the high-end price point of nurseries...so hang on.
AFK Furniture has an entire gallery of gorgeous children's spaces! Many celebrities have used their designs for their nurseries and the results are simply breathtaking. They are all very traditional in style, but each room could easily grow with a child into adulthood.

Another great retailer for classic nursery items is RH baby & child.
They have taken classic pieces of furniture and turned them into child sized versions.

These are pint-sized play tables...worthy of adult sized style.

Now....a few modern takes on the nursery.
Many of the furniture pieces and accessories will still be functional as the baby grows. Often chairs and side tables can be moved to another part of the house if space is limited with a larger bed.
Find multi purpose pieces...a dresser can act as the changing surface.
Finally, I'll share my baby girl's room. She will soon graduate from the crib to a big girl bed, but the neutral walls will allow for a change of accent color with new bedding. Her dresser will lose the changing top and add lamps and accessories. The bookcases will house more books and keepsakes instead of baby toys. Small, quick changes that will make if feel fresh, but not start from scratch.
